How to Wash a Velvet Fabric? (Part 2)

Velvet is one of the most popular fabrics that needs special care due to its delicate texture and soft surface. In the previous part, we explained how to wash this sensitive fabrics by hand and in the washing machine. The common denominator in both methods was the water temperature and the type of detergent. We also said that you should avoid grabbing by hand and turning too much in the washing machine. In this section, we will talk about removing stains, ironing and removing lint on the velvet fabric.

Removing stains from velvet

Removing stains from velvet fabric isn’t difficult, but it’s very important to do it as soon as possible. The longer the stains remain on the velvet garment, the harder it will be to remove them. So first, clean the stain as soon as possible and don’t let the stain get old. Never use strong detergents in any way.

Steps to remove stains

  • Remove residues on the stain. Some stains are the result of food spilling on velvet clothing. The first step is to remove the residues left on the stain. At this stage, be careful not to spread the stain. A few clean, damp wipes are all you need. Wipe the fabric only in one direction so as not to damage the fabric. Adding a drop of washing liquid helps to remove stains more.
  • Use another clean wipe to remove the detergent.
  • Wait for the fabric to dry, you can use a clean towel to do this. Place the towel under and over the fabric. Then wait for it to dry.

Ironing velvet fabric

It’s better not to iron your velvet clothes. You can use steam ironing to smooth the wrinkles. Hold the steam iron 2 inches above the clothes and let the steam penetrate your clothes. Avoid direct ironing; because it will damage velvet fibres. The soft and fluffy texture of velvet is extremely sensitive to heat. If you iron the velvet fabric, it will lose its shape forever and will be smooth and damaged. So place your clothes flat to avoid wrinkles. As a result, you don’t have to think about ironing it.

Removing lint from velvet

Lint usually accumulates on velvet clothes, in which case you should:

  • To get rid of them after washing the clothes, take them out of the washing machine. In such a situation that the clothes are wet, you can remove the lint at once. Don’t forget to do this before putting them in the dryer. First, take the garment out in a wet state, shake it a little and then remove the lint very easily. You can also use a brush or cloth to rub on the wet clothes and remove the remnants of lint or use a lint roller.
  • If the clothes are still fluffy, put them back in the washing machine. Add a cup of white vinegar and wash them again. Vinegar causes the fabric fibres to loosen slightly and the lint to separate. Put the wet clothes in the dryer. Put a few more microfiber cloths in the washing machine and hang them wet after you take them out. You can apply them with a brush or lint roller as you take them out of the dryer to remove the lint.

Each type of garment has special conditions for washing and storing it. If these points aren’t observed, it will damage the fabric of your garment. Velvet clothes are no exception to this rule and mostly need proper maintenance and washing. There are special conditions for keeping this type of clothing. If you decide to wash velvet by yourself, be sure to check its label for washing it correctly.
