How to Wash White Lab Coats (Part 1)

White lab coats are more susceptible to contamination, grease stains, laboratory and hospital materials than black and coloured clothing that isn’t easily removed. Washing lab coats with improper methods and detergents can damage the texture, colour and clothes fibres. This article will explain some suitable and straightforward methods for washing and keeping all kinds of white clothes, including a white lab coat.

Baking soda and lemon juice for white lab coats

Baking soda and lemon juice are excellent solutions to remove stains on the lab coat. Sweat or hospital stains make it a little harder to wash white coats. To remove these stains, clean the stained areas with water. Then pour a tablespoon of baking soda and lemon on the spot. Then wait for 15 minutes. After that, wash the clothes with water. You will see that the stained areas become clean and white like the first day.

 Bleaches

Washing white clothes with bleach destroys the fabric’s fibres in the long run and makes the clothes’ colour dull and yellow. To prevent this, it’s better to learn the basics of washing white clothes with bleach. First, pour some water into a large bowl and mix it with 1/2 cup bleach. Wait a minute for the enzymes in the bleach solution to activate. Then place the white clothes in a container containing the solution. Wait a while and check the clothes carefully to make sure there are no stains left on the clothes. Then rinse and dry them.

  • If bleach enters the eyes, rinse them with cold water for 15-20 minutes and see a doctor immediately.
  • If you swallow bleach, avoid vomiting and drink plenty of water to dilute the bleach in the stomach and reduce its corrosive properties. Vomiting, a corrosive substance, leads to burns of the esophageal duct, which has the weakest mucosa.
  • People with asthma, heart disease, respiratory disease, infants, children and the elderly shouldn’t be exposed to bleach.
  • Avoid mixing bleach with vinegar or any other acidic detergent, as it can cause chlorine gas to escape and cause respiratory poisoning.

Washing with vinegar

White vinegar is a good substance for removing dust stains from white coats. White vinegar also makes the fabric of clothes soft and supple. Mix a pint of white vinegar with a bit of water and use this solution to clean clothes. Then use a regular cleanser to wash the white lab coat.

Using aspirin tablets

There are various ways to clean white clothes. White clothes turn yellow or gray very soon. But you can use aspirin to whiten your clothes. To do this, dissolve five aspirin tablets in 7.5 litres of warm water. If you want the pills to dissolve faster, you have to beat them carefully. At this stage, you should put white clothes in this solution and let them stay overnight. You can also add detergent to this solution. After that, take off the clothes and wash them as usual. This solution can also remove jaundice caused by sweat. Another point is that to remove blood stains, you must dissolve aspirin in cold water. Hot water causes the accumulation of proteins in the bloodstain and makes the stain worse than before.

Washing white collar and sleeves

Before washing white lab coats, first, clean their collar and sleeves from any dirt and stains. All you have to do is take a bar of soap and carefully clean the collar and sleeves. Then wash the coat by hand or in the washing machine with the help of a regular detergent.

Using enough detergents

Avoid excessive detergents and washing powders when washing because it doesn’t cleanse your clothes and leaves a lot of detergent on their fibres. So it makes it harder to clean white lab coats, and you may have to wash the clothes a few more times by hand to remove dirt.

Using oxygenated water and lemon

Take a soft sponge or cloth to wash white lab coats and soak them in a little oxygenated water. Then apply it to the stain to clean it. After that, wash it with water. You can also use lemon juice to wash it. Just mix a little lemon juice with some water and soak the clothes in it. This method helps to remove hard and greasy stains.
