How to Wash a Tent?

Travelling tents are among the most important items you will need when travelling, hiking, and mountaineering. Since the cleanliness of your tent is a sign of your personality, we need to know how to wash the tent after each use. Tent cleanliness will help both the family health and extend the life of the tent. Here we will tell you how to wash and take care of your tent.

Washing a tent

We don’t need any special tools to wash the tent; we only need a mild detergent, lukewarm water and a sponge or soft cloth. But be sure to note that since most tents are made of polyester or nylon and have a polyurethane covering, don’t use strong detergents and cleaners such as acidic soaps, bleaches, hard sponges or hard brushes because it destroys the protective layer on the tent that we may not be able to wash it easily next time.

Since tents may be located in areas with dust, debris, sand, gravel, etc., we must first thoroughly clean the dirt and stained areas. Then we wipe them thoroughly with a dry cloth so that we can wash the tent.

You should use mineral oils to remove aphids or sap of trees such as pine or greasy stains from the tent. Be careful not to scratch them when removing them from the tent. Also, ensure that you don’t pierce your tent with sharp objects, such as knives or razors while cleaning.

Eliminate stains on the tent

We can use alcoholic products such as a hand sanitiser or a damp cloth to eliminate stains. After removing the tree sap and other stains, we should wash that part with lukewarm water. Now that we have cleaned the tent from dirt and stains, it’s time to wash it. Fill a large sink with lukewarm water. Then put a travelling tent in the water to get wet. The tent shouldn’t stay in the water for more than half an hour.

Then add a suitable cleaning solution or mild detergent to foam. Next, remove the sponge or soft cloth and gently wash all the tent area. After washing, drain the sink and rinse the tent again.

Washing the tent windows

For washing the tent windows, first, we clean the little yellow part with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and vinegar. Then use a suitable cleaning solution or mild detergent and water to wash them.

Drying

After washing the tent, hang the tent away from direct sunlight to dry completely. Of course, this may take up to 24 hours. Keeping the tent damp will cause it to become mouldy, foul-smelling, and eventually damage the tent over time. On the other hand, keeping a bad smell on the tent can cause some insects to accumulate around it.

Never use a hairdryer, heater, or dryer to dry your tent, as it may damage it. Even long-term exposure to direct sunlight can damage the tent. After the tent has dried, don’t store it in a damp, warm place, such as the trunk or underground. Instead, store it in a cool, dry place.

Washing tent zippers

When washing a travelling tent, be sure to brush the zippers and remove any sand, dirt, sludge, or anything stuck in the zippers’ teeth. Then rinse. After cleaning and drying the zippers, soften them by rubbing a softener such as coconut oil or graphite. Another easy trick is to rub the soap on the zippers.

Of course, we don’t recommend washing your tent in the washing machine. The washing machine is mighty, and you may lose its standing and durability. Even if repaired, it doesn’t have the necessary resistance during storms and strong winds due to the loss of the integrity of the tent seams.
