How to Wash a Mask?

If you have a cloth mask, you should wash it after each use. Note that a mask is constantly exposed to various agents such as germs, coughs, sneezes, breathing, saliva, burping, sweating, runny nose, and airborne pathogens such as viruses and a wide range of allergens. Therefore, the masks get dirty quickly, and it’s necessary to wash and care for them. However, you should note that not all masks are washable. If you wash them in detergents, they lose their properties and protection. Here we review the easiest way to wash and care for a mask.

How to wash and disinfect a mask with a washing machine

  • Wash your hands with soap and water. Then remove the masks from your face. When removing the mask, be careful not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Remove any disposable filters in the mask. It would help if you didn’t throw these filters in the washing machine as the filter pieces will spread to all the laundry.
  • Arrange the masks by colour. Don’t wash coloured masks with a white mask or clothed; Unless you are sure of the colour resistance of the mask fabric.
  • Most fabric masks can be placed in the washing machine with other clothes. If there’re other clothes, the mesh laundry bag will be a great way to prevent the masks from getting tangled. The mesh washing bag can be transferred directly from the laundry to the dryer basket.
  • Put the cloth masks in the washing machine. Set the water temperature to the warm option and set the wash cycle to normal. Then sanitize your hands immediately.
  • Afterwards, dry the cloth masks at the highest possible temperature. If your mask has rubber rings, you should dry it in the air to not damage them.
  • To wash and disinfect cloth masks, the use of ordinary powder or detergent is sufficient. For better effectiveness, it’s better to use bleach with detergent powder or liquid. You can also use a heavy cleanser that contains enough enzymes to break down dirt and sweat from the inside of the mask.
  •  The water temperature should be chosen depending on your mask’s fabric and raise so that the mask fabric isn’t damaged.

How to wash and disinfect masks by hand

  • Remove the mask from your face. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after removing the mask.
  • Instead of silk, fine or tight lace, it’s better to use fabrics that you can remove their stains easily. In fact, try to use a cloth mask that you can wash in detergent and warm water.
  • To wash and disinfect the masks by hand, fill the sink or other containers with warm water.
  • For every litre of water, add four tablespoons of bleach to the water. You can wash your masks thoroughly with hot soapy water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Put masks in the water and leave them for five minutes.
  • After five minutes, remove the mask and rinse the masks with lukewarm or cold water.
  • If you don’t have a dryer, expose the washed mask to direct sunlight, as ultraviolet light may help kill germs.
  • Once the masks are dry, store them in a covered container or bag for further use.
