How to Wash a Baseball Cap?

Hats are one of the coverage items that we have in winter and summer in different shapes. This practical item keeps us warm on cold days and preserves body heat. On the other hand, when the summer heat comes, there’re still hats that appear differently and protect us. Baseball caps are trendy among everyone. It’s very soft and causes the hat to be fixed on your head. The design of the baseball cap allows you to have a canopy in the summer sun. The sun doesn’t shine directly on your skin, and most importantly, your eyes aren’t damaged. If you wear a baseball cap to protect your eyes from the sun, support your favourite team, or hide your messy hair, you also need to know how to wash it properly. The correct ways to clean and care for this beautiful hat are straightforward.

Wash the new baseball cap

  • Fill half of the sink with cold water. Then, pour a full cup of detergent (without bleach) into the water and fill the sink with soap scum.
  •  Apply the stain remover to the stains on your hat before washing. These spots are probably the most common source of sweat and dirt.
  • Put the hat in soapy water. Carefully rub the dirty stain with a clean cloth soaked in soapy water. Do this to remove all contaminants. In addition to a clean cloth, you can also use an old toothbrush. If you are worried about damaging the logo or the name printed on the hat, brush the area with a toothbrush.
  • Take the water out of the sink. Rinse your hat under cold water until the water becomes clear and there is no more soap.
  • Dry the hat with a few small towels.
  • Place the hat on the towel in front of the small fan.

Wash the baseball cap without damaging the label

  • Wrap the label in plastic. Try to wrap as little as possible so that you can wash the hat more. Do this step only if you’re worried about damaging the label when you wash it.
  • Dip the toothbrush into a cup of warm water. Don’t mix the soap in water. Brush any dirt or sweat carefully. Using a toothbrush allows you to scrub precisely where you want. So it reduces the chance of discolouration.
  • Combine a teaspoon of detergent with seven or eight cups of water in a large bowl. Make sure the detergent doesn’t contain bleach. Bleach spoils your hat. To remove deeper stains, dip the toothbrush in a water and detergent solution, then brush the stain carefully.
  • Rinse the detergent by placing a toothbrush in warm water. Make sure this water is detergent free. Thoroughly wash the area you have rubbed with detergent.
  • Remove the plastic bag from the label and allow the cap to air dry. If you’re worried about your hat shrinking, wear it on your head when it dries. When the hat dries, it looks exactly like your head.

Wash old baseball caps

  • Do a test to see if the hat is worn. Soak a cloth in cold water and apply a small amount of detergent to it. Make sure you use a mild detergent. Spray a little “stain remover” on the area where the detergent is applied.
  • Apply the detergent mixture in a hidden place on your hat. The back of the hat is usually a good place to do this test. This test determines whether the colour of your hat changes when you wash it.
  • Wash the hidden part of your hat with a clean, damp cloth. Let it dry on its own. If the colour doesn’t change, you can clean the dirtiest part of your hat with a mixture of detergents without damaging the colour. But if the colour changes and you don’t want the cap to lose its original colour, you should wash the hat with water. Therefore, it will be more challenging to remove sweat stains.
  • Clean the rest of the cap with detergent and cloth. Apply soap on all parts. Pay special attention to the around of your head, as this area is probably the dirtiest part of your hat.
  • Wash the cap thoroughly in cold water with a washcloth. Do this until all the soap sludge is gone.
  • Let the hat dry on its own. To maintain its shape, place the cap on something like a head, a balloon or a coffee can.

Wash wool baseball cap

  • Use cold water to wash the wool baseball cap. Soak your wool baseball cap in cold water. Use a soft cloth and detergent to remove hat stains. Make sure the detergent used is for wool.
  • Be careful when washing a wool baseball cap. If you brush too hard or twist the cap, it may cause the wool to become rough and granular. This pressure gives your hat a felt-like texture.
  • Wash a wool baseball cap in cold water and roll it in a clean towel. Gently press the towel on the cap to drain the water.
  • Dry your wool baseball cap while wearing it on your head. As uncomfortable as it may sound, this step ensures that when the wool baseball cap dries, it fits snugly over your head.

Washing the baseball cap in the dishwasher

  • If you wash the baseball cap in the dishwasher, as the bottom basket is usually hotter, place the cap on the top floor so that the plastic parts of the hat don’t melt.
  • If your dishwasher doesn’t have a high metal, place the cap between the clamps inside the dishwasher to prevent the cap from deforming.
  • Wash the cap alone in the dishwasher. Putting the hat next to dishes may make the hat dirtier.
  • Then pour a tablespoon or 27 grams of washing powder into the dishwasher compartment.
  • Don’t use washing machine powder, and don’t put bleach and lemon in the dishwasher because it causes your hat discolouration.
  • Then turn on the dishwasher at the lowest temperature and in the shortest possible time.
  • Remove your cap before starting the dishwasher drying process. At this stage, because the temperature is too high, it may damage your hat.
  • To dry the hat, place it on a hanger or top of the cupboard to dry in direct contact with the open air. The use of heating devices changes the hat shape.

Important points

  • If you don’t want your hat to lose its shape, we suggest using hat frames, but you can use a balloon or a coffee if you don’t have it.
  • Choose the detergent carefully, make sure it doesn’t contain bleach.
  • Never dry the cap in the dryer.
  • When drying hats, try using a white towel for a white or light-coloured hat to prevent discolouration or fading.
  • Check the information inside the cap well before washing. Items such as the hat material, how to wash it by machine or just by hand, the desired temperature for washing or other items are also mentioned in the hat label.
