Different Tips for Caring and Washing a Tie

Washing a tie may not be an important or a significant concern for you. But when you pour your coffee on it on a Saturday morning before a business meeting or at the beginning of a wedding, your tie gets stained and dirty; you will realise how vital this seemingly simple issue can be. Ties are the shortest-lived clothes in a man’s wardrobe, so you should take outstanding care of them. With proper caring, the tie will last forever. We will review the tips for washing and caring for a tie. What we are talking about may not seem like an exciting topic at first, but tie staining is an issue that can suddenly upset your style.

Stain removing the tie

There are several ways to remove stains. But first, you need to know what your tie material is. Perfect ties are usually made of silk, but cotton, polyester and linen are also trendy. You can distinguish the tie fabric from the label and sticker of the tie. As you know, it’s much easier for liquids to penetrate the fibres than to get out. This feature tells us that we need to take action as soon as possible and immediately after staining. To remove some stains and prevent them from spreading, first, it’s better to let them dry completely. Then try to remove excess stains (such as pouring sauce) with a knife or an edged object and avoid rubbing it.

  • If you spill alcohol or carbonated beverages on the tie, you should wipe it with a clean towel, cloth or a paper towel. Next, gently rub a damp cloth on it. Be careful to do this gently as it may damage the tie fibres and change the shape of the tie. In many cases, this action removes the stain.
  • The best solution for oil stains on the tie is corn and talcum powder. Just act fast. Place your tie on a flat surface. Pour talcum or corn powder on it so that it completely covers the stain. Leave for a few hours and then wipe off the powder; then, you will see that the stain is gone. If it isn’t spotless, moisten the stain a little (for example, with a wet finger) and repeat this process.
  • If you stain your tie with ink, apply an alcohol swab or a cosmetic wipe. The stain is transferred to the surface of the alcohol wipe. Repeat this and if the napkin becomes completely coloured, replace it and repeat this process to eradicate the stain.

Washing

Unlike other clothes, it’s better to avoid washing all kinds of ties as much as possible. Cleaning a tie is very risky due to its delicate stitching. But if you do it carefully and pay attention to the tie’s material, everything will be fine. Although you may hear from some people that some ties can be machine washed, we have to tell you that this belief is wrong. Ties can be washed by hand or in the dryer, depending on their materials. Cleaning a tie mostly depends on its fabrics, whether silk, cotton, nylon, etc., but dry cleaning can be a good option for all kinds of ties.

Different fabrics washing

  • The silk tie is delicate and doesn’t have a good relationship with water. Water can remove stains from silk without any marks, but it can severely damage the tie’s tissue. Therefore, it’s important to remember to clean only the stained part with a damp cloth. It’s the best solution for a silk tie. Don’t use bleach or wring the tie if it gets wet because it loses its original shape.
  • A wool tie is the only tie that you should wash if needed; hand washing isn’t a good choice for this type of fabric; the wool is shortened by washing. Don’t use hot water and bleach. Also, don’t store it in plastic or the sun.
  • Gently wash the Linen and cotton ties by hand in hot or cold water. Never wring a tie or use bleach.
  • You should only wash cotton and knit ties with cold water. But you should still avoid wringing and the use of bleach.
  • Microfiber and polyester should be washed gently by hand in warm water. You have to avoid wringing and bleaching too.
  • Wash natural or synthetic leather tie only with a damp cloth and never rinse with water or use bleach.

Ironing the tie

Ties are very delicate and easily deformed. Immediately after removing your tie, hang it so that it doesn’t wrinkle. Although rolling and placing it in the closet isn’t necessarily harmful in the long run, hanging it in the closet on a tie hanger preserves its appearance better and reduces the number of wrinkles. So it’s better to have a tie hanger to hold the tie so that it lasts longer. Of course, the square tip tie is an exception to this rule, and it’s better to keep it rolled. This way prevents the tie from stretching and deforming.

Different fabrics ironing

  •  If you use a tie too much, it will wrinkle very quickly. So it’s better to buy a small hand-held steamer and steam the wrinkles that usually form around the tie knot.
  • To iron a silk tie, place a towel under it and a relatively damp towel on it. Put the iron on the tie with the lowest heat, and don’t remove the tie until the towel is completely dry.
  • You can iron polyester silk ties at a slightly higher temperature than silk but without steam. Don’t forget that very high temperatures melt the polyester fibres. Don’t forget to always iron the tie from behind.
  • You can also use low temperature and steam to iron a woollen tie.
  • Press the Linen and cotton tie in wet mode or iron with the steam mode settings.
  • For cotton, microfiber and polyester ties, it’s better to use low-grade steam washing or ironing.
  • Wash the knit tie if necessary and never iron.
  • A natural or synthetic leather tie shouldn’t be ironed or steamed.

Drying

For drying the tie, it’s better to expose it to the open air instead of placing it in the dryer so its structure and texture aren’t damaged.

Different fabrics drying

  • Exposure to sunlight causes the silk to turn yellow. Remember that body sweat can destroy silk textiles. Then you have to put the ties in a dry place. Because polyester silk is very sensitive to moisture and mould can irreparably damage the polyester silk tie.
  • To dry Lenin, linen and cotton, you must first take extra water with a towel. Never wring the tie to get excess water. Then hang it.
  • Spread the cotton, microfiber and polyester tie on a flat surface to dry after taking extra water with a towel because hanging can stretch its texture.
  • Hang a leather or synthetic tie to dry. Don’t expose this type of tie to heat.

Properly tying the tie and keeping it clean is very effective in making your appearance more stylish.
