07 Feb Removing Different Types of Glue Stains From Clothes and Carpets (Part 2)
Glues are one of the most important and widely used tools at homes that can stick to clothes and carpets due to their stickiness and make them look ugly. In the first part, we explained how to remove commercial adhesives and nail glue stains. We both explain the instructions for each and have listed the ingredients for geting start. now, we will explain how to remove hot glue and glitter glue.
Removing glitter glue stains
The glitter adhesive is a composite product. It combines simple white glue with paint and glitter making it much harder to remove. This stain is based on protein and colour. So it’s better to wash it with regular laundry detergent and oxygen-based bleach at water temperature according to the fabric label.
Materials required
- Coldwater
- Oxygen based bleach
- Regular laundry detergent
- White cloth, towel or sponge (for carpet)
- Dull knife or hard plastic file
Instructions
Removing glitter glue from fabrics varies depending on whether the adhesive is wet or dry. See instructions below.
- Remove the extra glue. If the glue is dry, use a knife to remove the dried glue as slowly as possible. Then follow the next steps.
- Start by soaking that part of the clothes in cold water. White glue is a protein stain. Hot water can cook the protein and make it more difficult to remove.
- In the next step, mix the oxygen-based bleach solution and cold water according to the pack instructions.
- Immerse the clothes completely and let them soak for at least eight hours. This step clears the paint components.
- If the stain disappears after soaking, wash it as usual. Otherwise, mix a new solution and repeat.
- If you notice that the glitter glue is stuck to a carpet, use a dull tool. Apply it to the same area as much as possible to remove the glue stain. Then mix oxygen bleach and warm water. Saturate the stained area and allow the solution to remain on the carpet for at least an hour. After that, wipe with a clean dry cloth. If the paint remains, repeat with fresh oxygen bleach. When the paint is done, sponge with plain water and let the carpet air dry.
ًRemoving hot glue stain
This glue is the best friend of handicraft makers. However, Hot glue resin and fabric don’t mix. Never try to remove fresh hot glue as it will only sink the stain deep into the fibres. This stain is protein-based and should be washed with acetone and regular detergent at the water temperature listed on the fabric label.
Materials required
- acetone
- Usual laundry detergent
- cotton swab
- White cloth
- Pieces of ice in a plastic bag (for carpet)
- A dull knife or a hard plastic
Instructions
- If you have a lot of time, put the stained cloth in the freezer overnight. It will make the hot glue brittle enough that you can remove it with a dull tool or your fingernail. Commercial cleaners can be used to remove stains and then wash clothes as usual.
- If you have less time, you can use acetone to remove the glue. Dip a cotton ball in acetone. Move it from the outside of the stain inwards. Continue to transfer the glue from your clothes to the cotton. When transferring the adhesive, use a clean cotton swab and continue working until all traces of the glue have been removed.
- Keep in mind that acetone or nail polish remover can’t be used on fabrics that contain acetate, triacetate or modacrylic. Because it dissolves these fabrics. Take a stained garment containing these ingredients to a professional dry cleaner. None of the home remedies for removing glue from these fabrics are safe.
- After removing the glue stains, wash the clothes as usual.
- If hot glue is spilled on your carpet, the easiest way to get rid of it is to freeze the glue by placing a plastic bag full of ice cubes on it. As soon as it hardens, it separates from the carpet fibres. You can use a dull knife to scratch it. If the freezing method with ice cubes doesn’t work, you can also use acetone on the carpet.
