Proper Washing Methods for Different Tablecloths (Part 2)

In the previous part, we explained the correct methods of washing Termeh, embroidery and beadwork tablecloths. We also mentioned the important points for washing, ironing and maintenance of each of them separately. In this part, we will explain lace, crochet and silk tablecloths and how to properly maintain and wash them.

Lace tablecloths

The lace is a popular type of tablecloth. There are no particular restrictions for washing them; But be sure to pay attention to the following points:

  • First, rinse them several times in cold water.
  • You can add a few tablespoons of salt to the water to remove dust from the fabric.
  • These laces can be washed easily using washing powder.
  • Keep in mind that lace fabrics become dull when bleached. To make them whiter and shinier, add a few tablespoons of baking soda to the water.

Crochet

Crochet tablecloths are gorgeous and impressive. Try one of the following methods to whiten and wash them without damaging their delicate threads.

Soaking in white vinegar

A little white vinegar will extensively remove stubborn stains on your crocheted tablecloths. Immerse this tablecloth in a solution of 3 litres of water and 1.2 cups of vinegar and let it soak for a few hours. Press it once every few minutes to allow the water and vinegar solution to penetrate the fibres. Gradually, the stains fade, and your solution turns yellow. If the solution doesn’t remove stains, soak your tablecloth in a solution of 7 litres of water and 1.4 cups of borax.

Cotton and dishwashing liquid

Another way to remove old stains from a crocheted tablecloths is to use cotton. Dip one cotton into warm paraffin or dishwashing liquid. Then apply on the stain. If you encounter more stubborn stains that are oily or protein, you can use diluted ammonia. Be careful never to mix detergents such as shampoo with ammonia, as it may cause burning vapours.

Whiten the crocheted tablecloth using lemon juice

Lemon juice is another popular cleanser for crocheted tablecloths. Spread your tablecloth on a clean white towel and soak the stains in fresh lemon juice. Then, spread it in the sun and the open air. Let the stains disappear naturally.

Silk

Washing silk tablecloths requires high precision. You can wash your silk tablecloth using the gentle washing cycle of the washing machine, but it’s better to wash it manually in the sink to take extra care of its fibres.

  • Fill the sink with cold water to help preserve the colour of the silk. Then add some mild detergent to the water.
  • Put a silk tablecloth in soapy water and soak it in water for a few minutes. Silk quickly releases impurities, so there’s no need to wash these fine fibres for a long time.
  • Drain the sink and gently rinse the silk tablecloth.
  • Silk is a protein similar to human hair, so treat it like your own hair. It means that you shouldn’t use harsh detergents for washing silk tablecloths.

Finally, you should know that it’s better not to wash the tablecloths in the washing machine, even in cases where the washing machine is allowed to be labelled because it may refer only to the fabric and its yarn bleed. The last point is that washing different tablecloths requires its techniques. Sometimes buying just a high-quality item isn’t enough. Maintaining it is also very important.
